I've had this verse stuck in my head lately:
Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices - mint, dill, and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law - justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
For most of my walk I had the notion that personal righteousness mattered most. That if you followed the rules and made your life right then you'll be in favor with God. And that's encouraged too but lately I've come to appreciate the latter part of this verse. Where the focus is not on individual morality but on the greater issues relating to justice, mercy, and faithfulness.
